From the Loom Heart of India to Contemporary Architecture.

For ninety-six uninterrupted years, our family has operated the vertical timber uprights across Maryadpatti and Gopiganj. We do not mass-produce decor; we translate pure high-altitude wool and Mulberry filament into generational architectural floor tapestries.

The Imperial Corridor: Akbar’s Royal Caravanserai to the World’s Carpet Capital.

The saga of Bhadohi took root in the 16th century under Mughal Emperor Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar. When a royal caravan of Persian master artisans was ambushed along the ancient Grand Trunk Road, local villagers of Madhosingh gave them shelter. In gratitude, the master ustads gifted their vertical pit-loom techniques to the locals.

Nourished by the mineral-rich waters of the holy Ganga and the sweet Varuna river—ideal for softening virgin wool yarns—the corridor expanded into a guild confederacy encompassing Gopiganj, Khamaria, and Maryadpatti. By 2010, the Government of India granted Bhadohi its celebrated GI Tag #201, formalizing its status as Asia’s undisputed epicentre of artisanal hand-knotted flooring.

Technical Anatomy

The 7 Stages of Mastercraft Looming

A genuine hand-knotted carpet cannot be hurried. From raw fleeces to architectural delivery, each piece consumes 180 to 360 days of deliberate manual choreography.

01 Fibre Selection

Highland Wool & Raw Silk Carding

We exclusively sort long-staple Autumn fleeces from Bikaner sheep blended with 22-denier mulberry silk, hand-carded using wooden combs to preserve natural lanolin resilience.

Raw Tensile Prep 14 Days
02 Pigmentation

Copper Vat Botanical Dyeing

Open-air boiling in pure copper cauldrons with crushed madder root, pomegranate rinds, wild indigofera, and marigold petals yielding deep tonal abraash variations.

Chromatographic Fix 9 Days
03 Score Writing

Architectural CAD & Talim Charting

The blueprint is encoded into rhythmic Talim chants—a phonetic weaving notation recited aloud like song to direct each weaver's knot colour, row by meticulous row.

Musical Cryptography 18 Days
04 Core Loom

Vertical Hand-Knotting

Up to 250+ Knots Per Square Inch (KPSI). An average 9x12 ft rug entails over 1.2 million individual hand-tied knots, tensioned continuously on monolithic sal-wood uprights.

Artisan Weaving 120–220 Days
05 Ablution

River-Stone Herbal Washing

Carried out using river stones and organic reetha (soapnut) baths. Squeegeed with wooden paddles to draw out loose pile fibres and burnish the natural silk lustre.

Natural Lustre Wash 7 Days
06 Solar Temper

Gangetic Sun Curing

Secured to tension frames on limestone open terraces. The intense dry heat straightens the warp line while UV rays naturally temper and stabilize botanical dyes.

Geometric Stabilization 10 Days
07 Finishing Art

Hand-Shearing & Silk Edging

Master trimmers sculpt the pile with heavy curved iron shears. The selvage borders are bound by hand with double-twisted silk yarn, finished with tailored fringing.

Tactile Sculpting 12 Days

Total Cumulative Patience

Honoring the Hands: Why We Put Our Weavers’ Signatures on the Ledger.

In traditional carpet trade, the master weaver is erased behind wholesale middle layers. At Bhadohi Atelier, every carpet is tethered to its specific creator. Weavers like Ustad Naimuddin and Master Weaver Shamim Akhtar have worked alongside our family for over 40 years.

"The loom is not our labor; it is our manuscript. Every knot is a prayer for peace in the home it will ultimately shelter."

— Ustad Naimuddin Ansari, Lead Weaver, Gopiganj Loom Guild
